This is the seventh of the Pagan Month History Series. The seventh month of our year July was renamed for Julius Caesar, who was born in that month. Previously, it was called Quintilis in Latin, since it was the fifth month in the ancient Roman calendar, before January became the first month of the calendar year (the year when displayed as twelve months in order) during the time of the decemvirs(this was a council consisting of 10 men) about 450 BC. In the ancient Roman calendar the ides of July fell on the 15th day of the month. July starts on the same day of the week as April every year, and January in leap years.
It is one of the 7 Gregorian months containing 31 days and traditionally in the northern hemisphere is the warmest month. Dog Days begin in July. Dog Days are the usually the hottest and sultriest and the dog star-Sirius rises at dawn and sets at sunset with the sun. The ancients believed that Sirius contributed to the heat during this period which is not true. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky and is a twin to our sun and 20 times larger! It’s just way farther away! During Dog Days it was said that animal sickness primarily among canines was prevalent. This was a time when dogs went Rabid. This is a possibility due to the fact that in ancient times there were no sewers or garbage collection and we all know that “dogs eat anything”
